Setting Up for an Extension: A Bricklayer's Guide

I love the precision of squaring off a building. There's something satisfying about getting those perfect 90-degree angles.

Squaring off the building is crucial for ensuring your extension is true and aligns correctly with the existing structure. We use a combination of measuring tapes, squares, and string lines to achieve this.

  1. First, we measure and mark the overall length of the extension (in our case, 4.6m).
  2. We then use a large square to ensure our lines are perpendicular to the existing house.
  3. For extra accuracy, we employ the 3-4-5 method to double-check our square.

Setting Up String Lines

Once we have our measurements and square lines, we set up string lines to guide our bricklaying. These lines are crucial for maintaining straight walls and correct positioning.

  1. We attach a string line to the existing house, aligning it with the face of the brickwork.
  2. This line is then stretched across to our measured points, creating a guide for our first course of blocks.
  3. We use blocks or stakes to hold these lines in place, adjusting them until they're perfectly aligned with our measurements and square.

Laying the First Course

With our lines in place, we are ready to start laying blocks:

  1. We plumb down from our string lines to mark the concrete where our first blocks will sit.
  2. The first block is laid carefully, ensuring it's level and aligned with our marks.
  3. We continue laying blocks along the line, adjusting mortar thickness as needed to account for any unevenness in the concrete.
  4. Special attention is paid to keeping perpends (vertical joints) tight and consistent.

Conclusion

Setting up correctly is crucial for any extension project. By taking the time to check levels, square off the building, and set accurate string lines, we ensure that the rest of the build will go smoothly. Remember, a good start makes for a great finish!
