Knocking through internal walls can dramatically transform your living space, creating an open-plan layout that's perfect for modern living. However, it's a job that requires careful planning and execution to ensure the structural integrity of your home is maintained. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to knock through internal walls safely.

1. Planning and Preparation

Before you start swinging that sledgehammer, proper planning is crucial:

  • Ensure you have the necessary permissions (e.g., building regulations approval).
  • Check if the wall is load-bearing. If it is, you'll need professional help to install a steel beam for support.
  • Identify any electrical wires or plumbing that may be hidden within the wall.
  • Measure and mark the area you plan to remove carefully.

2. Set Up Support

  • Install acrow props (also known as strongboys) to support the ceiling and remaining wall sections.
  • Place a sturdy board across the top of the acrow props to distribute the weight evenly.

3. Create the Opening

  • Start by removing plaster to expose the brickwork.
  • Use a masonry saw to cut neat lines where you want your new opening to be.
  • Carefully remove bricks, working from the top down.
  • For larger openings, work in sections to maintain stability.

4. Install the Steel Beam

If the wall is load-bearing:

  • Have a structural engineer calculate the correct size and type of steel beam needed.
  • Create pockets in the walls on either side for the beam to sit in.
  • Use concrete pad stones to distribute the weight of the beam.
  • Lift the steel beam into place (this is definitely a job for professionals).

5. Secure the Steel

  • Use slate and bricks to pack around the steel beam, ensuring it's level and secure.
  • Fill any gaps with mortar, making sure it's packed tightly.
  • Use a stemmer (pointing trowel) to push mortar into all the joints, ensuring no voids are left.

6. Finishing Touches

  • Once the steel is secure and the mortar has set, you can remove the temporary supports.
  • Plasterboard around the new opening.
  • Add beading to corners for a clean finish.
  • Skim with plaster for a smooth surface ready for decorating.

Safety First

Throughout this process, safety should be your top priority:

  • Wear appropriate protective gear, including a hard hat, safety goggles, and steel-toe boots.
  • Keep the work area clear of debris to prevent tripping hazards.
  • If you're unsure about any aspect of the job, consult with or hire a professional.

Remember, while knocking through walls can be a DIY project for those with experience, it's often best left to the professionals, especially when dealing with load-bearing walls. The structural integrity of your home is not something to gamble with!

By following these steps and prioritising safety, you can successfully create a more open and spacious living area in your home. Just remember to take your time, plan carefully, and don't hesitate to call in the experts when needed.
